Pot Cake Dogs

I came across an interesting article about potcake dogs the other day and I thought I’d share it with all the pro-adoption dog-lovers…

Potcake dogs are mixed breed dogs from the Bahamas, especially Abaco.
They got their name from pot cakes, the crust that forms at the bottom of a pot of peas and rice, which these dogs were traditionally fed on. These dogs are considered, by most, to have good characters.

Though some humans still see these stray dogs as a pest, many are adopted by dog-lovers who welcome them into their families. Rescued potcake dogs are highly regarded in the Bahamas.

Many of the pot cake dogs have become celebrities. The government is bringing out four postage stamps featuring potcake dogs based on the paintings of Bahamian artist Alton Lowe. The potcake dogs that will be featured on the stamps are Turtle, Oreo, Tripod and Amigo.

Amigo pot cake dog Amigo is another homeless dog rescue success story. He received a Good Will award from the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF), which was presented to him by the actor Alec Baldwin. He was also used in rescue operations following hurricane Katrina. He died in September 2007 after battling cancer. I think this is a prime example of what any stray dog can become if he is given a loving home.

In South Africa, we have no shortage of homeless dogs. Many people do take in abandoned pups, but many more still buy dogs. Please consider adopting a dog from a shelter or even from it previous human (owners who move and cannot take their pets with usually try to have their pets adopted privately through classified ads before taking them to a shelter.) There is no excuse for letting animals go on being homeless and abused.

TV Dogs: Eddie (Moose)

Moose

Moose

Moose was a Jack Russel Terrier who played Eddie, Martin Crane’s (John Mahoney)  dog on the hit TV sit-com Frasier.  Moose was born on 24 December 1990 in Florida. He was the youngest puppy in the litter, but also the largest.

Moose was too much of a handful for his original family who gave him to a manager of Birds and Animals Unlimited in Florida.  At the age of 2.5 years he was sent to Mathilde DeCagny, a trainer in Los Angeles.

After 6 months of training, this very intelligent Jack Russel won a role as Eddie on Frasier.

A running joke on the show was that Eddie use to stare at Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and thus freaked Frasier out. It is said that Moose received more fan-mail than any of the cast mates.

Apart from his role on Frasier, Moose also acted in commercials and in the movie My Dog Skip.

An autobiography was written of his life by Brian Hargrove, the life partner of David Hyde Pierce (Niles on Frasier).

After retiring, he spend the remaining 6.5 years of his life living with his trainer, her family, Enzo and Jill (another canine actor). He died of natural causes on June 22, 2006.

Enzo is Moose’s son and was born in 1995. After Moose retired, Enzo replaced him as Eddie on Frasier. While Moose was still on the show, Enzo acted as his stunt-double.

Jack Russel Terriers are highly intelligent and highly trainable little dogs. They require a lot of attention and exercise. Do not only get a Jackie because they look cute on TV. Before you buy a dog, make sure it’s the right dogs for you. Before you buy, consider adopting a dog.
